Sixth Form

A warm welcome to St Katherine’s School Sixth Form.

With a track record of great results – 63% of students gained A*-B or equivalent and 91% achieved A*-C in August 2018 – St Katherine’s Sixth Form promotes a love of learning and independent enquiry. We offer a broad range of A Level and vocational courses to suit learner needs.

Our students become well equipped with the necessary skills for continuation into further/higher education, training or employment.  Our Sixth Form is a close knit community of like-minded 16 – 19 year olds who are fully supported in achieving their goals, we are proud of our exemplary pastoral care.  Each student is part of a vertical tutor group (a mixture of year 12 and 13 students) and benefits from a close working relationship with their tutor.

In addition to this, the Head and Deputy Head of Sixth Form are on hand to guide the progress of each student from transition into year 12 until they take their first steps into the wider world.

The Sixth Form facilities are designed to provide a learning environment that supports study for a broad range of programmes that reflect the changing educational and employment climates around us.  These include: AS, A2 and Vocational courses as well as GCSE re-sit opportunities in Maths and English.

The Sixth Form has a dedicated learning resource centre with everything you would expect to help you complete your assignments. Through the use of Google Classroom and Chromebooks, the sixth form offers cutting edge, 21st century teaching and learning.  We share the well-equipped science laboratories, art spaces, IT suites, a dance and performing arts space and a sports hall with the main school.

A Level Results – August 2018

2018 saw a record-breaking set of A level results at St Katherine’s. The number of students achieving A*-A grades at A Level jumped to 28%, 12% higher than 2017, A*-B grades jumped to a record 61%, 12% higher than 2017, with 91% of students achieving A*-C grades beating the previous record by 13%. The overall pass rate was 100%.

Coupled with students achieving distinction* or distinction grades in vocational subjects, 63% achieved A*-B grades or equivalent. St Katherine’s continues to deliver excellent outcomes across both academic and vocational pathways for all their students.

Notable student successes included Remi Khalif who gained three A* grades and will take up a place at Leeds University to study Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering. Peter Blake and Zoe Coughlan secured two A* grades and one A grade and go on to study Mechanical Engineering at Bath University and Mathematics at Bristol University respectively.

These excellent results mean the vast majority of students secured their first choice university and 39% (up from 21% 2017) have secured places at Russell Group universities including Bristol, Leeds, Liverpool, Queen Mary’s and Cardiff.

Additionally, 52% of students securing a university place are the first generation in their family to do so. A number of students have also secured a range of apprenticeship and employment pathways.

Steve Colebourne, St Katherine’s Head of Sixth Form said:
“It has been a pleasure to work with these fantastic young people and I am hugely proud of them all. There are many personal triumphs to celebrate which reflect all the incredible hard work over the last two years. These results open a wealth of opportunities to our students, who will now take their next steps to university, beginning an apprenticeship or commencing employment.”

Justin Humphreys, Head of School, added:
“I’d like to congratulate our Year 13 students on these excellent, well deserved results, which reflect the hard work and determination by them and the dedication of their teachers. It was great to see so many smiles as students opened their results and thanked their teachers for their support.

I am delighted to see that students have performed exceptionally well across academic and vocational subjects and are being rewarded for their commitment and dedication over the past two years. As Year 13 leave our school community, we wish them all the very best for successful futures in their chosen pathway.”

Choosing A Course

The level of course you should study depends on your GCSE examination results, further explanation is provided below. You should also consider the following points whilst choosing which courses would suit you best.

  • Do I achieve better results in coursework or examinations?
  • Which subjects will I enjoy?
  • Which GCSE subjects am I good at?
  • Are there new subjects that I have not studied before?
  • What are my future career aspirations?
To help you decide you should consult:
  • Careers staff or Learning Partnership West
  • Parents/Carers and teachers
  • Subject specialists available at Open Evenings
  • Course leaflets for detailed information of course content
  • College Tutors at your admission interview
Two Year Full Time Programmes

Level 3
These include AS/A2 Levels, Level 3 BTECs. They all carry university entry points (UCAS points) – the difference is in the way that they are taught and assessed. Generally AS and A-levels are academic subjects that rely on examinations and coursework, BTECs prepare you for work through practical assignments and coursework. Most students take a combination of 4 courses at level 3 which can include AS/A2 Levels and BTECs (NB the Level 3 IB Diploma is equivalent to 2 A-levels and therefore equates to 2 subject choices).
